Kamitei
Kamitei Foundation is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve educational opportunities for children in rural Tanzania through investments in basic facilities, teaching materials, and training, as well as through the granting of individual scholarships to children who cannot afford to pay for their own education. It is run by Jeroen Hardewijk (Dutch) and Jane Ngwatu (Tanzanian) and is registered as a foundation in the Netherlands and in Tanzania.

Kamitei believes that well-educated and employed individuals can act as role models for others in the community and become (in)formal community leaders. Education is key to improving standards of living, empowering communities, and ending the vicious cycle of poverty and powerlessness.
Kamitei Foundation's initiatives have led to significant improvements in education and well-being for children and young people in rural Tanzania:
-
Meals: In 2023, they provided daily free lunches to 1,000 students, enhancing nutrition and learning capacity. kamitei.org
-
Teacher Support: They trained and supported 100 teachers and 100 teaching interns, elevating teaching quality and student outcomes. kamitei.org
-
Educational Resources: Over 10,000 books and essential learning materials were supplied, enriching educational experiences.
-
Scholarships: They awarded 80 multi-year Eagle Scholarships and 100 Community Scholarships, enabling students to pursue further education.
-
Infrastructure Development: The foundation facilitated the purchase of 400 desks in 2023 and constructed six toilet blocks, ten teacher houses, and twenty classrooms, improving the learning environment.
These efforts have collectively enhanced educational access and quality for rural Tanzanian youth.
Community Scholarships
The Community Scholarships offer a two-year vocational training programme. Former students have recorded an impressive employment success rate of over 90% during the past five years (compared to the generally accepted benchmark of 70% for successful scholarship programmes).

Teachers
Kamitei Foundation is committed to enhancing the quality of education in rural Tanzania by focusing on teacher development. Recognizing the disparity in teacher skills between urban and rural areas, Kamitei invests in professional development programs that equip educators with innovative teaching strategies, updated content knowledge, and improved classroom management skills.
Over the past decade, they have provided training, coaching, and incentives to teachers in rural primary schools. Additionally, the Kamitei Internships for Teaching Excellence (KITE) program offers newly qualified teachers, awaiting government employment, valuable internships to further their professional growth.

Meals
Kamitei Foundation collaborates with local communities to implement free meal programs in select primary schools, ensuring that hunger does not impede children's learning and development. By providing nutritious meals during the school day, students' health improves, allowing them to focus on their studies without the distraction of hunger.
School meals serve as a vital safety net, particularly for vulnerable students who may face illness, hunger, and malnutrition, with the school meal sometimes being their only daily nourishment. In 2023, Kamitei's initiatives provided free meals to 1,000 students, contributing to better school attendance and enhanced concentration throughout the day. This holistic approach not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also fosters a supportive learning environment that promotes overall well-being and academic success.

Eagle Scholarships
Eagle Scholarships support a student’s education from the last two years of primary school, through the first four years of secondary school, and ideally onto the two advanced levels of secondary school. Kamitei then assists the advanced level graduates with their university submissions and government loan applications.

Books
Kamitei Foundation is dedicated to improving access to quality education by providing essential books and learning materials to rural schools in Tanzania. Recognizing that a lack of resources hinders student progress, Kamitei has supplied over 10,000 books, significantly reducing the learning gap between urban and rural areas. These books cover core subjects, fostering literacy and a deeper understanding of key concepts.
By ensuring students and teachers have access to relevant and engaging materials, Kamitei empowers young learners with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. This initiative is a crucial step in creating a more equitable education system for all.

Facilities
Kamitei Foundation is improving learning environments in rural Tanzania by investing in essential school facilities. Many schools lack proper classrooms, toilets, and teacher accommodations, making it difficult for students to focus and for educators to stay long-term.
Kamitei has built classrooms, gender-segregated toilets, and teacher housing to create safer, more supportive schools. These improvements enhance student attendance, reduce dropouts, and provide a stable foundation for quality education, ensuring rural children have the same opportunities as their urban counterparts.
By addressing infrastructure challenges, Kamitei helps create a more effective and inclusive learning environment for all.
